Abstract:Archaeological research on the evolution of systems of keeping domestic animals in northeast Nigeria remains at a preliminary stage. Only the guinea fowl and the rock pigeon are part of the indigenous fauna, so all other species arrived later than the speakers of the main language phyla in the region, mostly at an unknown time in the past. Recent ethnographic survey work has provided a comprehensive overview of the present-day situation, both in terms of breeds, species and production systems. This information, along with material provided by historical sources, can be combined with recent lexical data on the names for domestic livestock to provide a speculative history of domestication. Both the source regions for species, the routes by which they reached the area and the mechanisms or agents of their diffusion are suggested by the interrelations of terminology. An extensive appendix of vernacular names for livestock species is presented to support the hypotheses advanced in the paper. App., bibliogr., sum. in English (p. 273) and French (p. 269).
