Abstract: | Trends in the flow of aid to Tanzania for the 1970-1991 period indicate that for the 70s and early 80s, the country received aid mostly in grant form. By contrast, the late 80s and early 90s witnessed increased flows of aid in the form of 'debt creating' loans. When the capacity to repay the maturing loans is measured by the country's export proceeds, it is clear that this capacity has fallen. Yet, judging at least from Swedish aid to Tanzania, the future prospects of increased aid to the latter seem bleak. The authors argue that the most feasible solution for sustainable growth in Tanzania is for the country to mobilize its own domestic resources. Bibliogr., note, ref., sum. |
