Abstract:The argument that export expansion will help to reduce a country's external debt may not be applicable in all cases because many factors determine the connection between the two variables. The ultimate effect of changes in exports on the external debt of the countries depends on the interest rate on the debt, the export to debt ratio, the rate of growth of exports and the elasticity of demand for exports. An analysis of data from 1989 for a sample of fifteen countries in sub-Saharan Africa indicates that an increase in exports is just as likely to raise the external debt as reduce it. Bibliogr., sum.
