About person:Hastings Kamuzu Banda (ca1906-1997)ISNI
Abstract:This article makes use of about 50 films produced by the Malawi government between 1966 and 1969 - a key period in the consolidation of Hastings Kamuzu Banda's control over Malawian politics - in order to understand his political style, manner of operating, and the use to which he put these films in bolstering his rule. Banda's self-image, with its egocentric and egotistical leadership style, is thus presented in the context of the national mood which he was trying to engineer. The article begins by providing a brief context for the films, notes some of their key characteristics, and then goes on to discuss Banda's style of politicking, the main themes, domestic and foreign, on which he dwelt, his handling of his own image, and concludes by discussing the films in terms of their use as visual propaganda.
