| Abstract: | Following the demise of apartheid, South Africa was welcomed into a variety of international organizations. This article deals with the participation of South Africa in four key organizations, viz. the Commonwealth, the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The article examines the varying benefits to be gained from membership of these organizations and, at the same time, warns against an overestimation of what, in practice, can be achieved.
