Abstract:Various empirical studies have shown that the diversity of growth rates between countries is largely caused by different rates of increase in productivity per unit of factor input. This paper analyses the long-run determinants of productivity growth for 27 South African manufacturing sectors from 1972 to 1990, a period of adverse internal and external economic conditions. Section 1 briefly presents the implications of current growth theories for total factor productivity. Some descriptive measures are used in the next section to describe the special features of the 27 sectors of South Africa's manufacturing industry. Section 3 discusses the econometric analysis used, viz. the cointegration analysis, to single out the determinants of total factor productivity growth for each industrial sector. Section 4 presents the final empirical results and interpretations for the various sectors of South African manufacturing industry and tentative conclusions are drawn in section 5.
