Abstract: | Amongst the factors which influence the marketing margins of private traders in maize and beans in Lilongwe and Dedza districts in Malawi are the cost of transport, handling and storage, as well as trader surplus. These factors were analysed and evaluated as to their relative importance on the basis of data collected during the 1990-1991 agricultural season. The results show that for maize traders selling to the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc), transport costs constitute the largest part of the marketing margin and storage costs the least. For maize traders selling to agroindustries, transport costs and trader surplus constitute the larger part of the marketing margin. In the case of beans, trader surplus constitutes the largest part of the marketing margin at all selling points (both Admarc and urban markets, as well as the two combined). Problems confronting private traders include lack of financial support and transport problems arising from high vehicle hiring costs, lack of vehicles and a poor road network. Bibliogr., sum. |
