Abstract: | 'Harambee' literally means 'let us pull together'. It is supposed to be a purely voluntary activity. Since Kenya's independence, many projects have been set up on a 'harambee' or self-help basis. When fees payments by students was introduced in Kenyan public universities in July 1991, the students responded by rioting. Their major complaint was that some poor students who had qualified for university admission would be denied university education, hence increasing educational and economic inequity. The community responded by raising funds through 'harambee' to assist the students. The present paper looks at the possibility of streamlining the 'harambee' movement to help poor students finance their university education. It assesses the limitations and potentials of the applicability of 'harambee' on a wider scale in the financing of university education in Kenya. The paper begins by describing the historical development and role of the 'harambee' movement since independence and the voluntary nature of 'harambee'. This is followed by a presentation and discussion of selected data on the amount of money raised through 'harambee' in aid of university students in the period December 1991-September 1992.
