Abstract: | Traditional settlements in Libya reflect man's response to the harsh environmental conditions and the need to sustain social organization and respect social and cultural traditions. This paper examines the old town of Ghadames in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, which is still a 'living bridge between traditional and contemporary architecture'. The town is fortified by a wall and consists of c. 1300 dwelling units, markets, mosques and other public spaces. It serves as an illustration of the evolution of housing which responded to geographical and climatic conditions and users' living requirements. Attention is focused amongst others on architectural character, house design, building materials, and the use of space, based on a survey carried out by the author in 1991. Bibliogr., note, sum. |
