| Abstract: | At present there are many opportunities for anthropologists to analyse the manner in which South Africans are interpreting and responding to recent political transformation. The most interesting target group in this respect is the white segment of South Africa's population. Many white South Africans belong to the elite that has run South African society and they certainly have the resources of education, wealth and social contacts to sustain some of their advantages into the future. But they no longer command the political heights of the South African State. How will they organize themselves, formally or informally, to respond to this situation? How will they attempt to construct and reconstruct their worlds of meaningful social interaction to exclude access, or limit access, by others? How will their activities in this respect change over time? How would anthropologists embark on this task of studying white South Africans grappling with rapid social change? On what kind of issues might they focus? The authors offer some ideas on how these questions might be approached. They suggest issues for discussion, indicate the parallels one might draw, and explore how a characteristically anthropological perspective might be brought to bear.
