| Abstract: | This issue of 'African Research and Documentation' contains the majority of the papers presented at the SCOLMA (Standing Conference on Library Materials on Africa) Conference held in London on 9-10 June 1994. The choice of the conference title, 'Images of Africa: the pictorial record', was deliberately general, in order to encompass as wide a scope as possible. Between them the contributions consider paintings, drawings, etchings and engravings, still photographs, ciné film, television programmes, and illustrations reproduced in books. They look at collections in libraries, archives and museums, and range in approach from largely theoretical discussions of the role of images and the motives of those creating them to more practical accounts of the nature of specific collections in particular repositories, and to the problems involved in cataloguing, storing and conserving them. Contributions by Andrew Tatham, Marion Harding, Elizabeth Edwards, Ann Datta, Sylvia Fitzgerald, Julia Sheppard, Sue Malden, James Patterson, Tom French, Terry Barringer, John Falconer, and Jackie Loos. |
