Abstract: | The production of Egyptian cotton is experiencing a critical phase as a result of decreased world demand for extra cotton varieties, in which for a long time Egypt was uniquely specialized under a comparative advantage. The area planted with cotton has been gradually contracting. In addition, the high international competitiveness among many cotton producing countries, the unstable supply of Egyptian cotton and its uncompetitive price on the world market have led to a continuous decline in Egyptian exports of raw cotton. In the context of its reform programme, the government has taken several measures to liberalize cotton. These relate to cultivated area, input prices, producer prices, and mill delivery prices, as well as the final marketing of cotton domestically and abroad. Nonetheless, the governmental cooperative marketing system still plays a vital role as an optional alternative for cotton producers. The present study examines production, returns and cost indicators of the cotton industry in Egypt; cotton pricing and the marketing system; sales prices and the required financing of cotton marketing; and the competitive capacity of Egyptian cotton. |
