Abstract: | This article reviews the experiences of agricultural technology development and transfer in agriculture in Ethiopia and presents some implications and insights that may contribute to increased agricultural productivity and sustainability. The introductory section briefly reviews some literature on the role of the agricultural sector and agricultural technology in economic development, including their importance for alleviating poverty and hunger. The second part addresses the crucial role of agricultural research and extension institutions in increasing agricultural productivity, paying special attention to the Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR) and the evolution of the institutional framework of agricultural technology generation and dissemination in Ethiopia. Part three presents the results of an empirical case study of agricultural technology development and adoption carried out in 1991 among 426 smallholders in the five major wheat growing districts of the Arsi region in the southeastern highlands of Ethiopia. Policy implications and recommendations conclude the study. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
