Abstract: | There are increasingly ominous signals that South Africa is being targeted as a major transshipment centre for a wide variety of narcotics. During 1993, police confiscated approximately R1 billion worth of drugs, an amount estimated to value no more than 10-15 percent of the South African narcotics trade. This article describes the types of drugs traded and the popularity of Mandrax in South Africa; the trade routes of drugs in Africa; the social, security and economic implications of drugs trade and consumption in South Africa, and the associated problem of money-laundering. The conclusion is that Africa continues to be the weakest link in the international war against illegal drug operations. It is common knowledge that once a relatively wealthy country such as South Africa becomes a major transit route, it is not long before it becomes a major drug consuming country. Notes, ref. |
