Abstract: | Although Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia have been free from the severe food problems that have afflicted their southern neighbours, these North African countries are nevertheless experiencing the same pressures of a rapidly growing population on an increasingly more vulnerable ecosystem. The three countries have endeavoured to find a solution to their food problems by increasing their agricultural production. But if Morocco has achieved some substantial successes, Tunisia has been less fortunate, and Algeria is on a course to disaster. The policies adopted in all three countries have disregarded one major factor: environmental constraints. The major aim should not be food self-sufficiency, which is impossible, but rather to achieve a balance between population numbers and natural resources. The growth rate of the population should be reduced and water saving schemes and land rehabilitation programmes implemented. Ref., sum. |
