Abstract: | The procedure adopted in the Niger River Fisheries Project in Niger was a significant departure from the practice of most development projects: it was rooted in a dialogue between the project's technical services and fishermen's organization and knowledge. The project started in 1983 and basic research on the river environment, fish populations, hauls, and fisherman society and economy was carried out between 1983 and 1987. Between 1985 and 1987 discussions were held between the project staff and the fishermen, resulting in a series of propositions for fisheries management. These concerned fishing sanctuaries, fishing gear and techniques, and fish growth and maturity. Notes, ref. |
