Abstract:The Arabic literary genre known as the '.tabaq¯at' is a kind of biographical dictionary. This article draws attention to the twentieth-century Sudanese Arabic '.tabaq¯at' as a historical source on leading policital and cultural personalities of the Northern Sudan, focusing on the period 1898-1956. It provides a survey of ten works in the genre, explains the general features of these works, suggesting ways in which they adhere to and depart from earlier patterns of '.tabaq¯at', and contrasts them with biographical dictionaries of the 'Who's Who' type. The following works are discussed: 'Ruww¯ad al-fikr al-S¯ud¯an¯i', by Ma.hj¯ub 'Umar B¯ashir¯i; 'Udab¯a wa-'ulam¯a wa-muarrikh¯un f¯i tar¯ikh al-S¯ud¯an', by Muhammad Ibrahim Abu Salim; 'Shu'ar¯a al-S¯ud¯an', by Sa'd M¯ikh¯a¯il; 'al-Shi'r wa'l-shu'ar¯a f¯i 'l-S¯ud¯an, 1900-1958', by A.hmad Ab¯u Sa'd; 'Shakh.siyy¯at '¯amma min al-Mawrada', by M¯irghan¯i .Hasan 'Ali; 'Rij¯al wa-maw¯aqif f¯i 'l-.haraka al-wa.taniyya', by Mu.s.taf¯a Mu.hammad al-.Hasan; 'Shakh.siyy¯at min al-S¯ud¯an: asr¯ar war¯a al-rij¯al', by Ya.hya Mu.hammad 'Abd al-Q¯adir; ''Al¯a h¯amish al-a.hd¯ath f¯i 'l-S¯ud¯an', by Ya.hya Mu.hammad 'Abd al-Q¯adir; 'Shakh.siyy¯at Ifr¯iqiy¯a', by 'Abduh Badaw¯i; and 'Kuntu qar¯iban minhum', by Ma.hm¯ud Ab¯u 'l-'Az¯aim. The works are all by and about educated men. App., notes, ref.
