Abstract:This book focuses upon Islamic resurgence in South Africa. Instead of the term 'fundamentalism', the author uses the term 'Islamic resurgence' to indicate the diverse range of Islamic movements that have tried to claim or reclaim a place for Islam in the public arena. Ch. 1 addresses the contested nature of the modern Islamic paradigm. Ch. 2 reviews two centuries of Islamic history in South Africa. Ch. 3 traces the rise of educated Muslim elites during the 20th century. Chs. 4 through 6 focus upon the Muslim Youth Movement (MYM), each chapter outlining a different phase that the movement has undergone during its twenty-year history from 1970 to 1990. Ch. 7 contains the conclusion.
