Abstract: | Greeting among the Ewe of West Africa is regarded as a responsibility and a right. It serves to identify the individual with his group and acts as an avenue for expressing solidarity as well as showing respect and deference to superiors. Greeting, as much as absence of greeting, can also easily betray ill feeling and hostility. The author describes the various types of greetings used by the Ewe, categorizing them according to whether they are ordinary greetings, occasional or topical greetings, and special greetings associated with ritual or customary situations, such as libation, and discusses some of the social and psychological factors which influence their use.
