Abstract:Indigenous soil and water conservation practices are rarely acknowledged in the design of conventional development projects. Instead, the history of soil and water conservation in Africa has been one of imposing external solutions without regard for local practice. This collective volume documents farmers' practices, exploring adaptations carried out by farmers in response to changing circumstances. It includes 27 case studies from Sudan (Mohamed Osman El Sammani, Sayed Mohamed Ahmed Dabloub, Yagoub Abdallah Mohamed), Morocco (M. Ait Hamza, Miloud Chaker with H. El Abbassi and A. Laouina), Niger (Abdou Hassan), Mali (Joanne Wedum et al., Armand Kassogué et al.), Burkina Faso (Matthieu Ouedraogo and Vincent Kaboré, Maja Slingerland and Mouga Masdewel), Nigeria (Are Kolawole, J.K. Adewumi and P.E. Odo, Kevin Phillips-Howard, E.M. Igbokwe), Zimbabwe (J. Hagmann and K. Murwirwa), Zambia (Patrick M. Sikana and Timothy N. Mwambazi), Ghana (David Millar with Roy Ayariga and Ben Anamoh), Tanzania (J.M. Shaka, J.A. Ngailo and J.M. Wickama, A.C. Mbegu, Anderson J. Lema, A.E.M. Temu and S. Bisanda), Swaziland (M. Osunade and C. Reij), Ethiopia (Kebede Asrat, Kederalah Idris and Mesfin Semegn, Million Alemayehu, Hans-Joachim Krüger et al.), Transkei, South Africa (Kevin Phillips-Howard and Chris Oche), Cameroon (François Hiol Hiol, Dieudonné Ndoum Mbeyo and François Tchala Abina, Paul Tchawa), Malawi (Julius H. Mangisoni, G.S. Phiri).
