Abstract:	This essay starts with a discussion of Simone de Beauvoir's equation of women and blacks and then describes the role of gender in (pre)colonial Africa. Next, it deals with certain aspects of gender representation in contemporary Africa and the debate on this issue. This not only involves the construction of images as such, but also the extent to which the gender of the author has affected oral or written literature and how male and female authors respond to each other's work from a more or less strong sense of gender awareness. Special attention is paid to gender representation in literature in South Africa. Bibliogr.
