Abstract:Continuing education has limitless scope, as an avenue for keeping up with new knowledge and techniques, as a process leading to the achievement of individual self-actualization, as a source of economic reward, as a means of providing necessary manpower resources, and as a complementary effort to the formal school system. To achieve these benefits, proper planning and adequate programme design are required. The authors outline the continuing education programme as it functions at the Department of Adult Education, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. They advocate the introduction of similar continuing education programmes in Lesotho, with a view not only to improving the failure rate of students at the Cambridge Overseas School Certificate (COSC) examinations, but also as a means of adequately integrating illiterate Sotho labourers returning from the South African mines into society through the provision of viable functional and vocational education. The authors include a proposal covering operational modalities which could be adopted by the Institute of Extra-Mural Studies (IEMS) in establishing a continuing education programme for Sotho adult workers and students of junior colleges and high schools.
