Abstract:Nigeria has tried to solve her food insecurity problem through several means, including massive State promotion of irrigation through the River Basin Development Authorities (RBDA). This collective volume, which is the product of a three-day training workshop held in 1992, reflects on the consequences of RBDA irrigation activities for Nigeria's socioeconomic and physical environment. Contributions: Adetoye Faniran (effects of irrigation projects on Nigeria's environment); Olusegun Ekanade (effects of agricultural mechanization on soil patterns); A. Ahmed (groundwater problems and salinity levels of Kano River Project); Segun Famoriyo (environmental effects of irrigation); J.S.O. Ayeni, Wolf Roder and J.O. Ayanda, Are Kolawole and O.A. Bamisaye (three papers on resettlement, including case studies of Kainji Lake and the Ijegu-Yala project); J.A. Ijere, Agnes F. Odejide, and J.A. Aremu and S.A. Ogunwale (three papers on the impact of irrigation projects on the socioeconomic environment, with case studies of Borno and Yobe States, the Lower Benue RBDA, and northern Nigeria); S.B. Ayo, Prachanda Pradhan and V. Kumar (three papers on commercialization of RBDA activities in the case of the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority and the Kano River Irrigation Project); Alh. Rabiu Babura and Joseph S. Omotowoju, A.O. Sanda, A. Fola Oladapo, and Olufemi Oludimu (four papers on organizational and management aspects).
