Abstract: | The increasing role of the private sector as the principal engine of economic and social growth in Egypt has called for banking services that extend beyond mere financing. The experience of the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) exemplifies the development of banking mechanisms and strategies to square with the country's new constructional objectives. The NBE experience encompasses a wide range of fields and includes financing infrastructure projects, establishing privately owned industrial cities, tourist and real estate development, supporting constructional development in Sinai and Upper Egypt, financing small-scale projects, employing young graduates, technology, satellites and communications projects, leasing projects, establishing the Credit Risk Guarantee Company for small projects, and preparing and evaluating economic feasibility studies. |
