Abstract:The University of Zambia's Institute for African Studies was founded in 1938 as the Rhodes-Livingstone Institute for Social Research. In the first fifty years of its existence the Institute made contributions which have earned it an international reputation for its research work. This paper assesses the contribution of the Institute to social science research during the period 1938-1988. It deals with the foundation and aims of the Institute, the research carried out and the works published by the Institute, its role in the training of anthropologists and sociologists, and the problems encountered and their solution.
