Abstract: | This book is concerned with the taking over of the Nubiic service on the acquisition of Independence by the New States. The author describes briefly how the difficulties of the period of transition were met in Ghana, Malaya and the Anglo Egyptian Sudan. But the book is chiefly concerned with Nigeria where the transfer of power is actually in progress, and the shape of the public services after the attainment of independence is still uncertain. Measures adopted to provide compensation for redundant staff and offered inducements for expatriate personnel to prolong their service, are explained. In part 4, the requirements of new states and the roles of an overseas service and international organizations are outlined, with some very interesting information on the activities in the field of the U.N. Technical Assistence Administrations. (Review article by H. Tinker, in International Affairs, Oct. 1960, p. 489-494). |
