Abstract:During the first half of the twentieth century in Europe a number of Ethiopian texts, including hagiological ones, were published. However, with the exception of Boris Alexandrovich Turayev's doctoral dissertation of 1902, no one attempted an analysis of Ethiopian hagiology as a historical source. A review of investigations in the domain of hagiological sources for the history of Ethiopia which have been carried out in Russia and abroad since the publication of Turayev's work indicates that foreign scholars at the time of Turayev were not ready to accept the ideas and methods of the Russian school, rooted in the achievements of Old Russian hagiological studies, while latter-day scholars such as Steven Kaplan and Taddese Tamrat live in ignorance of its very existence. As the scope of the available Ethiopian hagiographical works widens, they come to similar ideas and methods entirely by themselves. Bibliogr.
