Abstract: | Through religious groups, religion has played, and continues to play, a vital role in Nigeria's national development. The author charts the contribution of African traditional religion, Islam and Christianity to education, health and social welfare in colonial and contemporary Nigeria, indicating how various governments have attempted to strike a balance between notably Muslim and Christian groups, without much success, and highlighting both the functional and the dysfunctional aspects of politicoreligious interaction.
