Abstract: | The Owan people today inhabit two local government areas of Edo State, Nigeria. They comprise eleven discrete communities, most of them tracing their origins to migrations of founder heroes from Benin. This article constructs a dating framework for Owan on the basis of the genealogies of ten of the eleven Owan communities, viz. Uokha, Ora, Ihievbe, Emai, Igue, Ozalla, Ivbiaro, Iuleha, Arokho/Ikhinh, and Otuo. The chronology constructed shows the generations of Owan migration leaders against the dates of the Benin regnal list. An analysis of the chart indicates that the earliest exodus of Benin migrants to the Owan area occurred c. 1320-1347 during the reign of Eweka. Notes, ref. |
