Abstract: | Female participation in small-scale production and services activities in Tamale and Tema (Ghana) is described on the basis of data collected in 1989. The description covers the type of small-scale production and services enterprises in which women participate, factors which motivate women to set up these enterprises, the problems they face and the solutions they adopt, and the employment and income characteristics of enterprises operated by women. Women are presented as 'entrepreneurs' in terms of the management of their enterprises and their perception of business performance. The problems faced by women operators, their prospects as 'entrepreneurs' and the future of small-scale enterprises in the urban economy are highlighted. Bibliogr., sum. |
