Abstract:The spatial distribution of educational institutions in the 19 local government areas of Bendel State, Nigeria, was studied using the ratio between the population and the number of educational institutions at the end of 1984. Results of statistical analysis indicate that primary and postprimary (i.e. secondary, commercial, teacher training) educational institutions are fairly widely spread over the entire State. Their development is a function of past history and prevailing economic and sociopolitical conditions. The distribution of technical and vocational institutes, on the other hand, is poor and concentrated in a few local government areas. However, technical and vocational education in Nigeria is a recent phenomenon and its poor development is not peculiar to Bendel State, while the concentration of these institutions in a few local government areas can be attributed to the fact that most of them offer boarding facilities. On the whole, in terms of the allocation and location of both (post)primary and technical/vocational institutes, the marshy riverine areas, Burutu, Bomadi, Warri and Ethiope, are the least well-off.
