| Abstract: | Financial pressures on universities justify their need to generate extra income through such bodies as consultancy centres. However, research and teaching values may conflict with commercialization and there is a caution against selling academic integrity for financial gain. The author places the University Consultancy Centre, Legon (UCCL), Ghana, within the context of institutional mission and goals, looking critically at the management implications of a purely business enterprise in an essentially academic environment. He also considers the place of the Centre within the complex structure of the university as an organization, putting into perspective relationships between departments and between the Centre and the external environment. Problems and constraints are likely to arise as a result of the traditional attitudes, values and expertise of academics, while competence or success in the academic field is not a sine qua non for success in consultancies.
