Abstract:Drivers and pedestrians are responsible for many traffic problems, such as traffic jams, accidents and delays. Their behaviour needs to be studied as a first step toward recommending practical steps towards improving traffic management. The present study examined the behaviour of drivers in Accra, Ghana. The emphasis was on eight traffic offences, namely overspeeding in restricted parts of the city, unnecessary use of the horn, driving on the shoulder of the road when the intention is not to stop or take off, overtaking at dangerous locations, changing a route without signalling, driving with high headlight at night, stopping, turning or parking at unauthorized sections of the road, and failing to stop at pedestrian crossings. The data were collected through interviews and roadside observation of drivers on four selected roads into the city: Achimota Road, Tesano-Abeka Junction Circle Road, Independence Avenue, and Labadi Road. Information sought from drivers included driving experience, manner of acquisition of driving licence, errors and accidents in driving, and personal data. The survey indicated that traffic offences are becoming commonplace in Accra. The most common deviant behaviour observed included changing a route with signalling, misuse/abuse of the horn, and stopping, turning or parking at unauthorized locations. A possible explanation for the increase in deviant driving behaviour is drivers' inadequate knowledge and poor interpretation of the highway code. Bibliogr., sum.
