Abstract: | The emphasis of Nigeria's current education policy on practical work rather than theoretical knowledge supports the application of continuous assessment of students' performance at school. By its nature, geography provides a good ground for the progressive assessment of pupils in all three domains of learning - cognitive, affective and psychomotor. Based on a study conducted among geography graduates who were either school principals or who held the post of chief inspector of education or higher in the Ondo State Ministry of Education, the author found that in order to implement continuous assessment in geography properly, schools must be provided with adequate personnel, infrastructure and other basic equipment. Teachers have to devote time to constant tests and assignments, which must be graded and carefully recorded. In addition, the application of continuous assessment must be systematic, objective, cumulative, comprehensive and guidance-oriented. Bibliogr. |
