Abstract: | The author describes life and work on behalf of the Church of the Province of South Africa in South Africa, the 'salient of the missionary world', in the first half of the 20th century. The book, which originally appeared in 1931, has been revised. The sections on the dioceses of the Province - Capetown, Grahamstown, St. John's, Natal, Zululand, Lebombo, Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Johannesburg, Kimberley and Kuruman, Southern Rhodesia, Damaraland, St. Helena - have been entirely rewritten. A complete new chapter, by Oliver Walker of the South Africa Institute of Race Relations, has been added, on the problems created by the fact that South Africa is governed by a relatively small white population living among millions of Africans. |
