| Abstract: | The first multiparty elections were held in Lesotho in April 1993. It was no easy transition for the kingdom's return to civilian rule under Dr Ntsu Mokhele. The first threat to democracy was posed by the security forces, and then more problems emerged from the leading opposition party (the Basotho National Party or BNP) and the royal family.
