Abstract: | In the course of the last three decades there has been a substantial body of legislation in Commonwealth Africa which relates, directly or indirectly, to the prevention of corruption. The author reviews the ways in which the law has been used to tackle the problem of corruption in Commonwealth Africa, dealing first with criminal law, and then with the variety of supervisory controls (such as commissions, ombudsmen and so on) introduced to ensure high standards in public life. In the final section he assesses the effectiveness of law in this field and concludes that neither the 'toughening' of the criminal law nor the broadening of the powers and duties of ombudsmen and other institutions concerned with standards of public administration has proved to be a quick-fix solution to the problem of corruption.
