Abstract: | In southern Africa there are numerous information sources, such as libraries and data banks, whose missions end at the point where publications are catalogued and/or information is entered into a computer data base. In other words, there is a major problem with information transfer and utilization. This article aims at contextualizing the importance of information to the policy management arena. The author first discusses the significance of information, guiding principles, methodological concerns and cultural diffusion. He then deals with South Africa's national information policy (NIP), an initiative developed under the aegis of the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP), and with the role of information networks in the SADC countries.
