Abstract: | Before 1974 'Microthrissa (Poecillothrissa) moeruensis' or 'chisense' was reported from Zambia's Lake Mweru but was not considered a worthwhile exploitable fishery. However, during the latter part of the seventies successful small-scale fishing was reported along the northeastern shore and by 1985 it had expanded along the whole Zambian shoreline and to a lesser extent in the Luapula River. This report presents the studies undertaken since 1992 on various aspects of the fishery, stocks and the biology. It deals with the structure of the fishery; the biology of the species; fish stock estimates based on hydroaucoustics; the bycatch of the 'chisense' fishery; reported catches, catch per unit effort, total yield and income from the fishery; and the size and importance of the trade in the southern part of the lake around Kashikishi. The authors conclude that with an estimated annual catch of 30,000 to 40,000 tonnes fresh weight 'chisense' fishery in Lake Mweru is now extremely important as a cheap source of protein both for the Zaïrian and the Zambian urban areas of the Copperbelt. |
