Abstract:The resettlement schemes introduced in 1984 in the lowland regions of Ethiopia, such as Gambela in the southwest, have aggravated the deforestation process. During ethnobotanical fieldwork in 1991, the author collected 23 plant species - tree species, tree crop species and grass species - from natural forest, grass, traditional farms/settlements, mechanized farms and resettlement sites in Gambela and asked the indigenous Anuak about the local names of the plants and their various uses. In the present article he also indicates how the plants were treated and why they are being threatened by the resettlement schemes, as well as suggesting measures which should be taken to save them. Bibliogr., notes.
