Abstract:Ethnohistory is more than simply 'the history of ethnic groups'. The concept of ethnohistory is in fact ambiguous since ethnohistory may be pursued purely along 'etic' lines or it may be given an 'emic' dimension. In the former case, it remains a sterile undertaking; in the latter, it becomes an exciting field of study. Four examples illustrate the possibilities of an ideal ethnohistorical study. Two are from Ethiopia: the 'gada' chronology and the Borana concept of history, and the power of the spoken word and the morality of speaking and listening in the Hamar conception of history.
