Abstract:The 1980s and early 1990s have witnessed rapid steps towards the liberalization of the agricultural sector in Egypt with the abolition of State intervention in production, pricing and marketing. The authors elucidate the major components of Egypt's agricultural economic reform, including policies on agricultural credit, the exchange rate and the reform of public enterprises and privatization, and their impact on the food sector. They consider the impact of reform policies on the production and production costs of specific food crops, viz. wheat, broad beans, rice, cotton, and sugarcane, for the period 1981-1992.
