| Abstract: | The commission appointed to consider the question of the improvement of the coconut industry on the coast of British East Africa (Kenya) visited the most important centres where coconuts are grown - from Lamu in the north to the German border in the south, took evidence from the leading European, Arab, Swahili and Indian plantation owners and dealers in copra, and collected information from various sources. Its report, dated 1914, covers the thieving of nuts, the tapping of palm for tembo (native palm wine), control of the coconut beetle, cultivation, improvement in the quality of copra, proposed legislation to protect the industry, and the estimated expenditure entailed in enforcing the proposed measures and means of meeting this expenditure. Twelve appendixes present detailed additional information, amongst others on the approximate number of coconuts consumed for food, the approximate number of coconut plantations and coconut palms on the coast, the export of coconuts and copra from Lamu, Vanga and Mombasa, the estimated cost of bringing a coconut plantation to the bearing stage, and rainfall records. |
