Abstract: | In March 1991, the author returned to Uganda after a gap of 16 years. During those years much of the country had been involved in protracted civil wars, and thousands of people had undergone appalling experiences. The author, a social worker, had expected to find evidence of psychological damage. However, what struck her most was the energy, positiveness and will to rebuild shattered lives. Back in England she found that the literature on posttraumatic distress in non-Western settings was very thin. She returned to Uganda in May/June 1992 in order to gain some sense of the social and psychological impact of war on Ugandan populations by collecting life histories and narratives. A selection of testimonies, particularly of women and children, are presented here, each followed by the author's comment. |
