Abstract:These three volumes comprise a series of readings published by the Department of Economics of Usmanu Danfodiyo University at Sokoto in Nigeria on Islamic economics and contain a mixture of articles on such topics as Islamic economics, development, interest, population, and poverty. As the authors come from different backgrounds and have divergent interests, there are some conflicting views on the issues discussed. Among the topics debated are: 'zakat' (obligatory gift), birth control, how to develop an Islamic social security system, the theory of profits, the problem of 'riba' (usury) and interest, and other ethical hurdles facing Islamic banking. Comparisons are made with Islamic countries in other parts of the world like Pakistan and Malaysia.
