| Abstract: | One hundred years ago, on 4 November 1897, the railway that linked Kimberley with Bulawayo via Mafeking and Vryburg, was opened. This article describes the construction of the railway (that reached Mafeking in October 1994), the role of Cecil Rhodes and the Bechuanaland Railway Company, and the festivities that took place in Bulawayo when the railway was officially opened. In the 100 years since November 1897 the system that was later Rhodesia Railways and now, today, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NZR), has been the very lifeblood of Bulawayo. Bibliogr. |
