| Abstract: | This article results from various talks the author gave during a 1993 excursion by the History Society of Zimbabwe to the Gweru-Shangani area in Zimbabwe. Although essentially a centennial event commemorating the Anglo-Matabele War of 1893, attention was also paid to the Ndebele (Matabele) uprising - the first 'Umvukela' - which took place in the same area in 1896. It was dissatisfaction with the events during and after the 1893 war that led to the uprising during the months of March to December 1896. The Ndebele had lost two significant battles in the 1893 war but it was not in their eyes the full- scale defeat and dissolution of their nation-State as was believed by the settlers. The article outlines the reasons for the 1896 uprising; offers a short history of Gwelo (now Gweru) from 1893 to 1896; and describes life in the Gwelo laager during the uprising and the role of Captain J.A.C. Gibbs. Finally, the author focuses on the Shangani region and sketches the role of two stores, Pongo and Shangani, which changed into forts during the uprising. After the ending of the uprising, many of these localities were soon forgotten, and nowadays it is very difficult to relocate these sites. Bibliogr. |
