Abstract:The Ethiopian diplomatic mission to Valencia in 1427 or 1428 and the attempted 1428 alliance with Alfonso V of Aragon (Spain) are almost certainly the earliest negotiations Ethiopia ever conducted with a European power. However, much of the documentation has not been available to Ethiopianists because it came to light after the basic study by Francesco Cerone (1902-1903) or because it is in Catalan and is thus relatively inaccessible. The present article highlights the fifteenth-century contacts between Ethiopia and the Kingdom of Aragon. It includes the translated text of a memorandum from Alfonso V to the ambassadors he sent to Ethiopia concerning the proposed alliance in 1428, and a translation of an account by the representatives of Barcelona at the court of Alfonso V in Naples of the reception given by the king to a mission sent by Emperor Zara Yaq'ob in 1450.
