Abstract:Names of cultivated crops as they are attested in existing Bantu languages can be expected to provide clues to the spread of these crops in central and eastern Africa, either as they were carried by farmers newly opening up lands heretofore only exploited by hunter-gatherers, or as they were passed on from one cultivating group to the next. This paper examines in turn the major crop categories - cereals, root crops, pulses and bananas - with the special note that names of pulses and beans are poorly attested in most of central and eastern Africa and the most extreme confusion reigns regarding their exact identifications.
