Abstract: | This paper summarizes the results of recent archaeological research undertaken in the middle Zambezi valley (Zimbabwe), with particular reference to the Early Iron Age complex. The dating of the earlier level at one site, Kadzi, shows that the valley was occupied by early farmers at about the same time as were other parts of Zimbabwe. The ceramics tied to this new dating evidence have a number of implications for the interpretation of the regional Iron Age archaeology. Typological analysis of the pottery suggests a more complex picture than previously recognized. On typological and chronological grounds the author proposes defining a new ceramic unit and naming it Kadzi. Contrary to what was previously thought, the Iron Age sequence of northern Zimbabwe is now shown to go back to the early part of the first millennium AD, with occupation sites of early farmers comparable in age to those of other parts of the region. These new data also modify recently computed models of the movements of early farming communities over the Zimbabwean plateau. Bibliogr. |
